The Dohi-Sai Festival & Warriors Parade in Yugawara
           ( 湯河原での 「土肥祭」と「武者行列」 )

                                         2. 4. 2017 加藤雅喜

The warriors’procession in memory of Yoritomo’s army is reminiscent of ancient Japanese history. Warriors Parade in Memory of Minamoto-no-Yoritomo(源頼朝)’s Army & Dohi-Sanehira(土肥実平)”is open on the first Sunday,April, every year.

This procession is held in memory of the days when Dohi-Sanehira , the head of a powerful clan and one of Kanto’s Great Eight Heike , ruled over his domain in this Yugawara (old name is Dohi-go), including the area around Odawara(小田原). The clan owned a manor about 837 years ago, the Taira-no-kiyomori(平 清盛)era, at the end of the Heian era in Kyoto(平安時代の京都).
On August 17, 1180, when Yoritomo raised an army in Izu-Hirugakojima(伊豆蛭小嶋), Dohi-Sanehira commanded the army, followed by his whole family. He supervised the strategy, the weapons and the battles, with the help of the Hojos(北条、政子Its family’Masako is wife of Yoritomo) from Izu-Nirayama(伊豆韮山).
The area around Yugawara Station used to be the site of the Dohi family’s palace, and Joganji Temple (城願寺300-meters from the back of the station) used to be their private Buddha statue hall. And Gosyojinja shrine(五所神社)is a place of victory prayer.

In this Yugawara, after raising an army in Izu, Yoritomo and Sanehira worked out their strategies to head for Kamakura(鎌倉), made war preparations, and headed out for battle in Ishibashiyama(石橋山), with Yoritomo’s 300 odd warriors on horseback.
Unfortunately, outnumbered by their enemy, Yoritomo’s army lost the first battle between the Minamoto and Taira clans, and retreated to Sugiyama mountain(土肥の杉山) in the Dohi-Sanehira’s domain.

Sanehira’s wife Carrying foods Into a mountain“Dohi-Osugi”(土肥の大杉穴)or“Sitodo-no-Iwaya”(しとどの窟)for Yoritomo and husband Sanehira, called the“Seven Knights ”(七騎). Watching home burned while running away, Sanehira danced the dance“Joumou-no-Mai”(焼亡の舞) without banging. In this way, With the help of Sanehira’s bravery, maneuvers, discretion and foresight, Yoritomo hid in Sugiyama, Dohi-go, and escaped from Manazuru-Iwa (真鶴・岩海岸)for Boso Peninsula(房総半島)on the sea.
Just four months later, Yoritomo built a larger army of 30,000, and established the shogunate in Kamakura. (鎌倉幕府将軍) At that time, Sanehira was 73 years old, Yoritomo35. and The elderly Sanehira’s power is truly amazing.

In Japanese history, those ten days in Yugawar(Dohi-go) were the opportunity that led to the birth of the medieval feudal government. (武家政権)It is refered to as, a time when history was altered.
Yoritomo’s government was followed, those of Oda-Nobunaga, (織田信長)Toyotomi-Hideyoshi,(豊臣秀吉) and the Tokugawa-Ieyasu(徳川家康) shogunate.
This events are explained in more detail in the “Azuma-Kagami(「吾妻鏡」)”,“Genpei-Seisuiki (「源平盛衰記」)”, and “Heike-monogatari(「平家物語」). There are books of The Rise and Fall of the Minamoto and Heike Clans.
